Best universities in Africa

Higher education is just as important as primary or secondary everywhere in the world.  Africa understands this and is trying to build more and more Universities for people to receive bachelors, masters or PHD degrees. Here is a short list of top ranking universities in the continent.

University of Cape Town (UCT)

This University is a public research facility and has over 20,000 students. This university’s mission is to ensure academic freedom along with creative and rational thinking. All these parts of the mission require balance between freedom and discipline. Decisions are being made during debates and consultations. It’s located in the Western Cape of the country and is the oldest one in South Africa.

University of the Witwatersrand (Wits)

It’s located in the largest urban area in South Africa and also a provincial capital.  Wits is worthy of attention because of its excellent research, very high standards and commitment to social justice in general. Wits university has one of the largest fossil collections and for almost a century has been contributing to the Science of Paleo. Here you can find one of only twelve IBM research mega labs in the world.

Stellenbosch university (SU)

Stellenbosch university was founded in 1918. It was the first university which signed the Berlin Declaration on Access to knowledge in sciences and humanities. Students here have their own nickname, they are called “Maties”. SU color is maroon and in Afrikaan language that means “tomato which”. There is another theory on how this nickname was created, because of the word “mate” which means buddy or friend. Stellenbosch university is the second- highest ranked University in Africa. Under one roof you can find faculties of Theology, Engineering, Law and many others. Some of the faculties are not situated in the main campus like Medicine and Military Science.

The American University in Cairo (AUC)

AUC university is based in Egypt. It was founded in 1919. The first teaching language is English. AUC offers 36 bachelor, 44 master’s and 2 PhD programs for higher education. Assets of the university include its library collection, 3 theaters and fifteen research centers.  The American University has more to offer for their students from a different perspective as well. They are building a culture of leaders and liberal arts majors, in addition to lifelong learning. It is an independent, non-profit organization that stands for equal opportunities for everyone.

University of Pretoria (UP)

UP is a multi-campus public research University located in Pretoria which is the capital of South Africa. It was established in 1908 and was the fourth university in the continent to receive University status. Achievements are awarded nationally and internationally. Their biggest achievement is their Human Rights center. This is an integral part of human rights activism which is very needed in rural areas of Africa. Center’s values are being promoted through educational outreach and advanced courses in the AUC.

All over 54 countries in Africa there are 620 universities that provide students with higher education and the number is growing steadily by the help of all the organizations and their funds, because of the increasing demand of the large population.
