Issues with education for disabled in Africa

Education is very important thing in every grown up and child’s life, but there are people with special needs that require different education programs. Even here in Europe we have not reached the point where we can be proud that we made all education programs accessible to disabled people, but it needs to be our main goal to make everyone equal and UNESCO is helping with that. Let’s talk about children with disabilities education availability in Africa.

Disabled children are often left behind the education system. In the world lives over 150 million children, this statistic is taken from World Health organization. But there is issue with knowing how many children have special needs individually. Countries never know how to include disabled children into the normal education system. Stigmas, unfit schools, teachers and staff that are not trained because it requires more funding, learning materials which are not suitable or based on their needs – these are the reasons why education is not accessible for children with disabilities.  To have quality education is every child’s right.

UNESCO and World Health organization are preparing plans for Africa to help children receive that fundamental right or learning. Project has goals to reach teachers from around the world and prepare them and give the required training. Special models are being prepared for children to be happier and become part of society. Inclusive education has a lot benefits because it is focused on diversity and responds to individual child’s need.

The approach of those programs is holistic. There are various of activities delivered to change the attitude about disabled do’s and don’ts.

There is an idea about children education via paying is suitable while learning, but everyone who still thinks they need to look for example in UK where there are play groups are so hypocrite. This is a primary activity in schools because teachers can do their own thing while children play. But as example, we need to look at Finland where playing is different because it involves physical, social and communication activities. Children engage with one another and teacher. This promotes health and well-being of the child. That kind of play sparks child imagination, responsibility and concentration. Finland is the most literate country in the world that’s why it is the best example of solving this issue.

There is a program which is a trust fund called Disability- Inclusive Education, from which students in Africa with disabilities in Africa are being funded by World Bank. There are some serious outcomes expected from this. First, to educate African governments about the need of this kind of programs for special needs children and that they need to implement policies and programs and practical things into education system. Second, that availability will be increased for both genders equally, boys and girls will have the same access to education program for disabled. Fund is going to promote more strategic use of resources that are already accessible and new ones to include disabled children into standard education system and support the emerging needs and prioritize their needs.
